The Weyes Blood frontwoman grew up singing in gospel and madrigal choirs and first picked up a guitar at age 8. The album has touches of jazz of Hoagy Carmichael mingled with journeys of scholars and playwrights. Lead singer, Natalie Mering explains the piece of work is an alchemy of the future and ancient times at once creating a Rubik’s Cube of an album.

Recorded at the beginning of 2018, the album is a culmination of 3 albums and years of touring. Expect levitating arrangements, transcendent vocals and conversational songwriting. There is a confessional theme drawing upon movies and love such as Titanic.

The track ‘Movies’ explains the idea of brainwashing the idea about romantic love while ‘Andromeda’ explains the universal need to be saved by people living in their own galaxies. Andromeda’s companion track ‘Everyday’ deals with the chaos of modern day dating.

Mering explains that her observations found in the album are more meditative than cynical and that this plays out in an ethereal saunter.

You can catch the universe designed by Weyes Blood at Academy on Friday 29th October.
