Catch Parasite director Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer and The Host at The Pink Room

Bong Joon-ho is the name still fresh in the minds of cinephiles across the world. He’s been in the business for over 20 years, but it was back in May last year when his magnum opus Parasite began making ripples at the Cannes Film Festival, ripples which would take him on a journey to take the world by storm and sweep this years’ Oscars.

Known for his genre-defying filmmaking, Bong Joon-ho’s first major success came with ‘Memories of Murder’ back in 2003, a Korean-language film that has been compared to Zodiac, but, much like Parasite, has a wicked comical edge.

The two films being presented by Above The Line on Sunday firstly take us back to 2013 to his first English-language picture, Snowpiercer, starring Tilda Swinton, Chris Evans, Jamie Bell and Ed Harris. When the Earth enters a second ice age, the last of humanity survive aboard a train with an eternal engine, never stopping as it speeds around the globe.

Based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige, Snowpiercer had limited box office success due to a spat with disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. He had insisted upon a number of edits which Joon-ho refused, resulting in a limited theatrical release. Now, thanks to Parasite’s success, his fans are able to discover that he’s been making top of the line movies long before some of us had even heard his name.

Following Snowpiercer, Above The Line will be screening his 2006 Korean-language monster thriller, The Host, starring longtime collaborator Song Kang-ho. When a man’s daughter is kidnapped by a monster – which is itself the product of American toxic waste being dumped in the River Han – her whole family set out to bring her back.

The first film Snowpiercer will screen at 17:30 and The Host will begin at 20:00. There will be a short break in between. Entry is free but seating is available on a first come first served basis, so be sure to register your interest below.
