Manchester based artist, Rachael Bellis, will exhibit her collection of work from Thurs 29th June in the Northern Quarter’s bar and and pizza hangout, PLY.

The mixed media exhibition will explore why we judge and are judged and the way labels form part of our identity whether we want them to or not. The work will also address the influence of the media on our expectations and preconceptions about each other and who we are behind these labels.

Rachael’s work will be made up of 10 large canvases of paper collages created using paper torn from magazines and with each piece there will be an accompanying QR code that will link to a specially created slideshow.

A love of words in all their guises plays a big part in Rachael’s work, either through her use of text within her work, or in the inspiration she takes from stories, song lyrics or poems.

The majority of Rachael’s work addresses issues she feels strongly about and/or the way media and society affect our behaviours, opinions and attitudes. This often stems back to questions surrounding how we perceive each other, why and the effect that it has.

While studying, she had work accepted into an International Women’s Day exhibition in Liverpool and has had work featured in ‘Average Art’ magazine. This year, she has exhibited as part of a group show ‘She Will Need Her Sisterhood’ and had work displayed at University Hospital, Liverpool.

Rachael’s collection is the 7th in PLY’s #LifeWithNoLabels strand of exhibitions, the concept of which was inspired by the 2016 Absolut Mix limited edition bottle. Eight artists and collectives will be part of the programme, and in September one will be awarded the PLY x Absolut Award for Emerging Talent.
