Iconic Manchester music venue, The Roadhouse, closes its doors on 1st June. The owner of The Roadhouse, Manchester has announced its imminent closure with a “heavy heart” today.
The historic independent venue situated on Newton Street, just off Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester City Centre, will host its final gig on 31st May. A cornerstone of the local music scene and national touring circuit, The Roadhouse remains one of the landmark venues for any live band cutting their teeth.
Its iconic stage has hosted the likes of Coldplay, Stereophonics, Fleet Foxes, The White Stripes and more recently ex staff members and hometown heroes Elbow. Opening in 1993 as a Blues club with John Macbeath at the helm, The Roadhouse followed in the footsteps of hundreds of Manchester’s basement dive bar clubs of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s; attracting a wave of new musicians alongside social and artistic peers – shaping what is now Manchester’s beloved Northern Quarter.
Kate Mountain, Roadhouse owner for 16 years along with Steve Lloyd says, “The Roadhouse has championed thousands of local musicians who dreamed of rock and roll stardom, it was a commitment we have always taken seriously, offering a stage and an opportunity to local bands from the first week we opened the doors and will do so until the very last.”
Kate and co are programming some memorable send off gigs and club nights throughout May before the official closure on 1st June – these are to be announced
