A brand-new creative partnership for Manchester’s expanding food and drink culture is announced today as the Royal Exchange Theatre, Rupert Hill and Goska Langrish launch their new city-centre venue The Rivals, named after the very first production at the theatre back in 1976. An exciting creative collaboration between two innovative Manchester businesses sees the Royal Exchange’s restaurant, bars and cafe fully redeveloped to embrace its dramatic location, and the introduction of an indoor beer garden to celebrate the stunning architecture of the Exchange’s Great Hall.

Rupert and Goska are established names in the city’s eating and drinking culture. Rupert is both a recognised stage and screen actor and co-owner of the successful venues The Castle Hotel, Gulliver’s, The Eagle Inn, Baker’s Vaults and part of the team who launched The Parlour – winner of the coveted Observer Food Monthly Best Sunday Lunch Award.

Rupert said… I’m so excited about this new venture, a place where both my passions come together in one stunning venue. We will be bringing not just a great new food and drink offer (including a wide range of cask ales and craft beers), but also a commitment to all the arts in our own events programing and promotion.

Goska Langrish has a long-established career in hospitality, both here and in London and was instrumental in the success of The Parlour. She added… This is a very exciting venture. We have always prided ourselves in delivering great food and service. We aim to run our sites like a family business and we hope to bring this same inclusive and warm approach to The Royal Exchange.

Mark Dobson, the Royal Exchange Theatre Executive Director said….
The Rivals is a fantastic addition to the Royal Exchange and St Ann’s Square and we’re thrilled that this new venture will be fronted by the brilliant Rupert Hill and Goska Langrish who bring all their knowledge of Manchester’s food and drink culture to our theatre. I look forward to celebrating our productions with audiences, cast and crew in this new city centre venue.

The indoor beer garden will be open to coincide with shows from the 31st August, whilst The Rivals restaurant and bar will be open to the public on the 14 September. Watch this space for more information and news about this brand-new city centre eatery.
