As one restaurant in Manchester closes, another opens. Yorkshire based My Thai takes over the old Splendid Kitchen site on John Dalton Street, with plans for a second venue already in the pipeline.

The restaurant focuses on traditional Bangkok style street food which perfectly reflects what you can find cooked on the streets of Thailand. The menus are different at each of My Thai’s sites, but all fresh, quality dishes served in the traditional Thai manner.

We visited the restaurant on a midweek night in the early evening and were pleased to find there were already a number of customers dining in the new venue, from students to a large Thai family, and a few couples on dates. Decked out in just the right level of tacky, with toilet rolls on the tables and posters all over the walls, this causal dining space has a real feel of Thailand, especially on a hot & sticky Summer’s eve.

The menu is split into main courses and rice dishes with Brit favourites such as Thai Green Curry, Pad Thai readily available, as well as more traditional Thai dishes on the Foodies menu. This isn’t the same same but different fancy Thai you can expect in a lot of restaurants in Manchester, expect special dishes such as Som Tum with stinky fish, salted crab, or Yen Ta Fo, seafood noodle soup in a pink broth. As well as the extended offering on the menu, there’s also an additional choice of vegan specialities, something to suit everyone.

Eager to try out the menu, we ordered the Thai Fish Cakes and Moo Yang grilled pork to start, which both arrived swiftly fresh from the kitchen, with tastes reminiscent of Khaosan Road in Thailand.

For mains, we ordered the Bangkok Pad Thai with pork from the main menu, as well as the Yum Woon Sen, a glass noodle and chicken salad from the Foodies menu. Both plates arrived with really generous portions and a huge hit of spice. The Pad Thai with pork, egg, rice noodles, bean sprouts and a sprinkle of the peanuts & spring onion was a firm favourite, and £7.50 was huge value for money. The Yum Woon Sen, a glass noodles and chicken salad with chicken, red onions, coriander and peanuts serves with a chilli and lime dressing was just the right level of spice, and tasted light and fresh.

The drink menu is simple, and inexpensive, wash down a great meal with a bottle of Thai Singha and you’re good to go.

All in all this was simple, no fuss Thai food, served in a fun setting with really reasonable prices. This one is sure to be a winner.
