Gray’s Larder
The petite Gray’s Larder resides in Chorlton and is a complete lesson in how neighbourhood dining should be done. Small, but perfectly formed with a range of sophisticated modern-British dishes, made with the highest quality ingredients and lots of lots of love. The shabby-chic bistro is famous for its ham hock scotch egg- oh and it’s gluten free so extra brownie points there.

One88 Kitchen and Bar
Located in the leafy suburb of Whitefield, One88 offers a fantastic dining experience outside the city centre. Classic British is the name of the game, and Head Chef David Gale brings you just that over breakfast, lunch and dinner. They offer a Scotch egg on the snack menu served with hot mustard and pickle. No surprises and perfectly executed- sometimes keeping things classic is the way forward.

The Cake Scotch Egg
That being said about keeping things classic, a wild card never hurt anyone. The chocolate cake Scotch egg is the brainchild of Stuart Thornley cake design. It consists of whole Cadbury’s Cream Egg surrounded by chocolate fudge cake, coated in melted chocolate and rolled in caramel biscuits. It’s certainly out-there and a chocoholics dream- get your paws on one from the Manchester Makers Markets.

The Manchester Egg
It wouldn’t be a Scotch egg round-up without giving a shout out to our very own adaptation. Invented back in 2010 by Ben Holden it consists of a pickled egg, wrapped in black pudding and sausage meat, rolled in breadcrumbs and deep-fried. You can probably guess, but the idea was hatched in a pub, and this local delicacy is a Mancunian treasure. Luckily, Kosmonaut’s new pop up Fat Tony’s has them on the menu for £6- so make sure you pop down and give one a go.

Happy Belly from Cheese Hamlet
Maybe you’re on the go, maybe you’re going on a picnic, maybe you’re looking to enjoy the pleasures of a scotch egg in the comfort of your sofa in your underwear. What then? Well, that’s where The Happy Belly Scotch egg comes in. Available from The Cheese Hamlet in Didsbury Village, this egg is everything you want it to be and even boasts a runny middle.

Grafene
The only thing cuter than a bucket full of kittens is the miniature Scotch egg you will find on the lunchtime deli board from Grafene. Made with a quail’s egg, this definitely takes the prize for the poshest Scotch egg, and with the plus that it comes with a range of other yummy morsels such as cured meats, cheese, homemade piccalilli and freshly baked bread.

Bay HorseTavern
A modern take on a Victorian pub in the heart of the Northern Quarter. Relaxed, inviting and unpretentious with classic British food to match. The Scotch egg from the small plates menu is probably on the larger side – so is perfect for those who aren’t up for sharing but is made up from everything you’d ask for in this humble bar snack.
