After the inclusive success of independent promoters Grey Lantern and Bad Uncle’s first Box Social in March at Levenshulme’s Klondyke Social Club, the two unite for another Box Social for the ages! Ten live acts, DJs, and independent record label fair and more besides are set to descend on south-east Manchester for a truly eclectic day of music.
The live line-up includes Sheffield’s afro-beat-cum-noise rock tour de force Blood Sport and irrepressible Durham DIY pop band Martha; also travelling from outside the M60 are hard-hitting punks Broken Arm, ahead of their new LP out on Gringo Records / Art For Blind, and a pair of Mancunian debuts for Glasgow art-rock four-piece Sharptooth and expansive-sounding Bristol noise rock foursome Repo-Man.
Top billing among the locals are scuzzy pop collective Sex Hands, whose latest album Pleh – out on Faux Discx – has been getting rave reviews. They’re joined by melodic emo/grunge rockers Claw The Thin Ice, the angry hardcore-tinged punk of Denim & Leather, O>L>A’s soaring electronic pop and the raucous delirium of Salford Media City.
A big part of the day — as it was last time — is about forging links between as many pockets of Manchester’s music community as we can, and so we’re delighted to also be hosting an independent record fair as part of the event, with several second hand distro stalls also pitching up. There’ll be food too, while Championlover and alternative club night DJs Violent Femmes are taking over the bar area.
