For the third of Blank Media Collective’s Masterclasses season they have invited prize-winning poet Helen Mort to speak at their gallery BLANKSPACE.

In the creative arts there are no right answers. It’s not always clear which path is the right one to take for success. It can be a daunting journey from taking those first steps to making it pro. How have others made it to winning prizes, featuring in magazines and showcasing their work? How does an aspiring performer make a name for themselves? How do you get your work published?
Throughout March and April, Blank Media Collective have been hosting a series of Artists’ Masterclasses at BLANKSPACE (43, Hulme Street, Manchester) to discover just that. They have carefully selected four people who have taken that professional step and succeeded in their creative field. Each Masterclass has included a free Friday night event. Speakers have discussed their life and career, while offering advice to emerging artists. Q&As and open discussions have proved to be truly inspiring to those attending and so far the masterclasses have been a real success. The first two masterclasses in March saw children’s book author and illustrator Chris Haughton and then theatre writer and director Rikki Beadle-Blair take to the floor. For April and third in their series is prize-winning poet Helen Mort (12th April) and then the masterclasses conclude with Fine Artist Paul Rooney (29th April)

Helen’s story is an inspiring and amazing one. She was five times the winner of the Foyle Young Poets award, first winning the prize at the young age of thirteen. In 2010 she was the youngest ever poet in residence at The Wordsworth Trust, Grasmere. Her pamphlet ‘A Pint for the Ghost’ (Tall-Lighthouse Press) was a Poetry Book Society Choice for 2010. Her collection, ‘Division Street’ is forthcoming this summer from Chatto & Windus.

Helen has been invited to BLANKSPACE to share some of her brilliant and illuminating poetry in an extended set where she will intersperse the readings with the journey through her career, the inspirations and motivations behind her work and what she’s doing now, so you can gain an insight into how you might gain success in your career.
Everybody is welcome to come along to get some up close and personal insights from someone who is committed to life as a writer and who has an excellent reputation for the quality and integrity of her work.
