The output from The Penthouse is impressive. This forward-thinking Northern Quarter artist’s space hails quite literally from the rooftops (they occupy the top floor of a 1961 office block on Hilton Street in the Northern Quarter) and manages to bring together and present a truly eclectic and inspiring range of artists and shows. Quite literally as they say “ideas fly from the rooftops”. Next up, on Thursday 10th October, is an open studio with artist Holly Rowan Hesson.

This not for profit artist space set up by artists Debbie Sharp & Rosanne Robertson claims to be “A place for making, doing, sharing and showing” and continues to explore new and insightful ways for artists to develop new work. Whilst using the space to develop their own practice, Debbie & Rosanne genuinely put the support of emerging artists at the fore, attracting residency applications from a wide variety of boundary pushing creatives.

Offering a variety of ways to make work and share work via their studios, project space, off site projects and artist led exchanges, The Penthouse put emphasis on risk taking, new directions, experimentation, and the multi sensory and are constantly looking for refreshing ways nbso online casino reviews of connecting to people.

Their most recent artist in residence is Holly Rowen Hesson. As part of From the Rooftops, the Penthouse offered the residency to a recent graduate they felt would benefit from time and space dedicated to making new work post graduation.

As they say “Holly recently graduated with distinction from MA Contemporary Fine Art at the University of Salford and was selected for the residency based on her graduation exhibition ‘Only forward?’.

“For Only Forward? Holly used her graduation exhibition to carry out her own end of course residency occupying a large empty city centre office/retail unit. Holly demonstrated an intelligent use of space and efficient decision making and editing. The risk of responding to this specific time and space without a definite ‘show’ in mind for the end point, for us, paid off well. What was offered was both an end point and a starting point, a crucial moment in time. We are excited by Holly’s approach and believe it will flourish, well paired with the experimental interests of The Penthouse.

“Holly has used her residency to explore her interests in site specific approaches to developing, making and showing work that starts with a camera and grows and becomes ever more layered over time.”
