A courtyard space under the Mancunian way on Oxford road seems an unlikely location for the city’s latest entrepreneurial ventures to ply their wares, but Hatch is abuzz with activity. From art and fashion through to craft and design there’s something for everyone – not to mention cutting edge food and drink vendors to satiate every taste.
RETAILERS
Paint Sayers
Street artists ‘Paint Sayers’ for example, create wall mural art, and their new Hatch shop is their first ‘physical’ business – previously having had an online-only presence. Rebellious and passionate, Paint Sayers is the work of Manchester-based Mural Artist Lee Hartley. They specialise in wall murals, live art and custom artwork, and they’re now operating from their own little shop at Hatch, where they take commissions, and originals and prints of their work can also be found.
Beehive
Similarly, it is a first shop for independent florists Beehive too. They bring a stunning selection of flowers, plants and bespoke floral arrangements to Hatch. The beautiful blossoms will be adding a splash of colour to the space under The Mancunian Way.
Nonsense
With a permanent outlet already in Prestwich, Nonsense, is bringing its quirky blend of unique gifts to Hatch, selling everything from indoor plants and ceramics, to stationary and books. The husband and wife team, Alex and Jeanette also host children’s craft workshops for little ones to show off their skills and create masterpieces to take home.
DRINK
Love + Labour
Hatch’s Natural Wine shop – Love + Labour – are the city centre’s first all low-intervention wine retailers. Helping shoppers bring home something different for the table, Love and Labour sell all-natural, organic wines only.
Takk
Northern Quarter artisan coffee house, Takk, is one of Hatch’s anchor brands – they have a more permanent home at the development where they’ve created a pop up version of their Nordic-inspired coffee bar and welcoming work space – Takk Espresso Bar. The Takk concept is born of a love for the food, drink and styling that owner Phillip Hannaway and his team discovered on their travels throughout Scandinavia and Iceland, and that’s exactly what Hatch customers can expect too – with one big, exciting addition.
OL
OL is Takk’s baby brother – a nano brewery and keg bar. A collaboration with Byrne the Cake Brewery and completely unique in Manchester, OL serves up the bar’s own beers brewed on site, allowing customers to drink it straight from source. They also serve up the best craft beers from around the northwest so customers can expect pints, bottles and cans from the likes of Track, Runaway, Cloudwater and many more.
OL overlooks Hatch’s lovely, outdoor courtyard and al fresco dining area. Serviced by the evolving streetfood traders, there’s plenty of seating, shelter from the elements via a living green terrace roof, festoon lights and a DJ booth.
STREET FOOD TRADERS
Blue Caribou Canteen
British Street Food Award finalists Blue Caribou Canteen serve up the finest poutine this side of the Montreal. Poutine is French fries and cheese curds topped with gravy hailing from Quebec. Blue Caribou’s poutine uses squeaky Québec-style cheese curds made to an authentic Canadian recipe in the Forest of Bowland. It’s all lovingly handcrafted, and the preparation remains true to the authentic foundations of the dish with ingredients sourced from local artisan producers.
El Marchador
Serving up Mexican-inspired street food. They are Hatch’s taco specialists bringing incredibly tasty, 100% plant-based and gluten free Mexican food to the community. Customers can expect a vibrant and delicious menu including tasty vegan tacos and tamales.
Eat and Sweet
This family-run Jamaican takeaway is based in the Northern Quarter and now have their very own Hatch outpost too. A welcoming Caribbean kitchen, they serve up jerk vibes and gorgeous, Jamaican soul food. Affordable and authentic they offer meat and veggie options, home cooked with a whole lot of flavour and love.
Well Hung
For the discerning carnivores, the Well-Hung kitchen serves an affordable and quality range of lunch and dinners, including classic steak and dripping chips with a chimmichurri sauce, or eat-on-the-go tasty steak sandwiches.
With a series of live events already off the ground, an ever-growing portfolio of independent operators on the horizon, and ‘Phase two’ expansion planned for August, this is only the beginning of an exciting story for Manchester…
