With male grooming being one of the UK’s largest growth industries over the last few years it’s been a surprise for me to learn that Manchester is seemingly behind the curve. With shows such as Mad Men and films like Inception your archetypal clean shaven, sharp and well groomed alpha male has never been so in demand. So with that in mind, I sacrificed my beard.
The Gentry Grooming Co. is Manchester born and bred. In 2005, They opened their flagship ‘Male Grooming Salon’ and following its success additional salons were opened in the North West. Over the last 7 years they have grown not only in size but in their offering, one of their latest, and one I was most interested in, is the Wet Shave Treatment.
There are few places in Manchester you can get a traditional wet shave, and even fewer that you can get a Wet Shave Treatment. More than just the shave, as I found out, this combines exfoliation and cleansing, with hot towel relaxation and of course a smooth finished shave.
My Barber for the afternoon was Wendy, with over 4 years experience in wet shaving and being a teacher of the art herself I was in safe hands. The service was brilliant and the treatment itself was second to none. The Gentry Grooming Co. take this treatment so seriously they have perfected their own range of products especially for the service. You can buy them separately, but for me it’s all about the experience of heading down there and have someone else sort your life out for an hour.
It was a great experience for me, interesting as-well to hear about the use of exfoliation, natural face wash and moisturiser in the context of facial hair. Just explained in that matter of fact way it all makes sense, there’s no need to invent phrases to sound manly like “re-invigorate your skin” or “re-energise your face” – just quite simply put, if you do this, then this, then moisturise, you will to a degree be better off in the face department.
I highly recommend giving it a try, get in touch with them and sort it out, it’s something you’ve got to try at least once, and you might as-well do it whilst Don Draper is making it the coolest thing on the planet.
