A Pedestrianised Stevenson Square. The People's Pop-Up Park is here!

It's not permanent (yet) but show your support and the council just might do something about it.

Through the tireless efforts of a small group of campaigners, the council has agreed to the closure of Stevenson Square this Wednesday 19th June from 4.30pm – 9.30pm.

The 5-hour closure is in aid of celebrating Clean Air Day on Thursday 20th June, a day which aims to improve the air we breathe while also bringing awareness to the issue of poisonous gasses in the air of pretty much every major city on Earth.

The aim of The People’s Pop-Up Park is to create an actual park – a chance for people to show the powers that be that they want a pedestrianised public square in the heart of the NQ.

So the plan is to create as much of a park atmosphere as possible. From 4.30pm on Wednesday 19th June they want you to head on down to Stevenson Square and in their own words…

“we need activities. We need trees, flowers, grow boxes, we need beautiful fencing, tennis/badminton equipment. We need classical music, buskers, a brass band, a children’s area, a dog park, dogs, people, a small-sided football pitch, yoga, pilates, tai-chi, a book club, chess, dominos, astro turf, fitness equipment, seating, tables, ice cream…and the sun.”

The idea of pedestrianising Stevenson Square has been knocking about for years now, and if I’m honest I personally think it’s a great idea.

This seems like the perfect opportunity to show the council that it will be in their best interest to look further into the idea, especially with regards to pollution and public health.

The People’s Pop-Up Park will take place on Wednesday 19th June from 4.30pm – 9.30pm. The area that will be closed off to traffic will be from Oldham Street to Newton Street.

See you there.
