Open Kitchen MCR have joined forces with Beer Nouveau to create SURPLUS – an evening full of beer and street food created by everything that would’ve otherwise gone to waste.

An estimated 15 million tonnes of food is wasted in Britain every year from the field to the plate, meaning the carbon footprint wasted through food production alone is 3.3 gigatonnes.

So we can kinda get a grips on what the hell that means, if food waste was a country it would be the 3rd highest CO2 emitter in the world.

Steve from Beer Nouveau accepted the challenge to create small batches of interesting beers using gluts of fruit and herbs all provided by Open Kitchen MCR. Beer Nouveau have been brewing experimental beers often with foraged ingredients for ages so easily stepped up to the challenge.

After closing their restaurant, Open Kitchen MCR also jumped at the opportunity to get back in the kitchen and flex their street food muscles. They’ve created a sexy small menu of small plates for the craft beer crowd to go along side the new beer.

SURPLUS is now a weekly event taking place every Friday night from 4pm until Christmas.

For every tonne of food stopped from going to waste, 4.2 tonnes of CO2 is prevented from being emitted.

So if you love beer, great food or just want to help save the planet, SURPLUS Friday’s is where you need to be.
