Mikron Theatre Company is set to present a new play by renowned playwright Amanda Whittington titled “A Force to Be Reckoned With” at the Greater Manchester Police Museum & Archives on Saturday 20th May. The play offers a light-hearted yet insightful look into the lives of Women Police Constables (WPCs) in the 1950s, celebrating their spirit, optimism, and determination to break through the glass ceiling in a male-dominated profession.
“A Force to Be Reckoned With” follows the story of WPC Iris Armstrong and her unlikely partnership with WPC Ruby Roberts. The two women form a specialist department, attending to cases involving women and children, from troublesome teens to fraudulent fortune tellers. Throughout the play, the audience learns about the history of pioneering women in policing, from Edwardian volunteers to Suffragettes-turned-moral enforcers, all while uncovering the secrets hidden within the iconic police box.
Amanda Whittington, one of the most widely performed playwrights in the country, expressed her delight in returning to Mikron Theatre Company for its 51st year. Whittington has written over 40 plays throughout her career, including “Be My Baby”, “The Thrill of Love”, “Kiss Me Quickstep”, and her recent Ladies trilogy. Her work has also appeared on Radio 4, with seven series of the award-winning “D for Dexter” and contributions to “The Archers”.
“A Force to Be Reckoned With” will tour nationally this summer, alongside Poppy Hollman’s new play “Twitchers”, which explores the history of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) in a lighthearted and entertaining manner. As the theatre world continues to recover from the challenges of the past few years, this captivating play about trailblazing women in policing is a timely and engaging addition to the Mikron Theatre Company’s repertoire.
