Manchester will host a series of fashion events this September as part of Fashion Britain, a new nationwide programme from the British Fashion Council.
The initiative will see more than 1,000 events take place across Manchester as well as Bristol, Dundee, Edinburgh, Liverpool, London and Newcastle. They’ll range from designer talks and exhibitions to retail events and live performances.
In Manchester, the programme includes a British Fashion Council and ELLE UK designer panel at Manchester Art Gallery featuring designer Aitor Throup. The discussion will be moderated by ELLE UK commissioning editor Naomi Pike.
The Warehouse Project will also be involved as it marks its 20th anniversary, with the BFC planning a pub quiz and music showcase in collaboration with the Manchester club series.
Meanwhile, Trafford Centre will host The House of Fashion, a week-long programme featuring styling advice, seasonal fashion and behind-the-scenes content.
Fashion Britain has been developed as part of the British Fashion Council’s Strategy 2030, with the organisation aiming to create more opportunities for designers and creatives outside London and support regional creative industries.
Laura Weir, chief executive of the British Fashion Council, said: “I am incredibly excited for the launch of Fashion Britain this September. British fashion has always been shaped by people – their local identities, global perspectives, creative disciplines and the communities that shape culture from the ground up. It’s vital that we recognise, celebrate and invest in talent wherever it exists across the UK.
“Fashion Britain is about decentralising fashion, by creating stronger pathways for creativity, opportunity and growth in every part of the country. That is why we are collaborating with leading cultural institutions alongside over 100 of our designer members to build a stronger, more connected future for British fashion.”
The wider September programme will involve designers including Charles Jeffrey, Priya Ahluwalia, Saul Nash, JW Anderson, Simone Rocha and Rejina Pyo, with further events still to be announced.
