Are you into your industrial electronica? Or what about gothic dancehall and dysfunctional rap? If the answer is yes, you’ll want to get Salford’s Fat Out Festival in your diary, as the DIY experimental Salford-based four-day party has just released its unmatched line-up for 2023.
Taking over Islington Mill just off Chapel Street, Fat Out festival is a celebration of the underground arts scene, or, as founder Emma Thompson puts it “an incredible array of noise makers arriving in Salford.”
With a line-up ranging from the industrial sounds of GAIKA to the transcendence of Dawn Terry, and an orchestral arrangement from BBC Philharmonic & Erased Tapes, Fat Out Fest explores all shapes and shades of experimental musical performance.
The festival opens on Friday 22 September with a performance from London-based label Erased Tapes in a unique collaboration with BBC Philharmonic, with features from some of the label’s most intriguing artists, including; Rival Consoles, Hatis Noit, Penguin Cafe and Douglas Dare. The show is hosted by presenter Elizabeth Alker and will be recorded for BBC Radio 3’s Unclassified.
Later that evening, things ramp up at Partisan, Salford’s hidden party den on Regent Trading Estate. Bristol-based producer Grove has curated a line-up featuring rapper/producer Algernon Cornelius, who has played alongside Armand Hammer, Sons Of Kemet, and The Bug, and TaliaBle, a London-based rapper will bring her “punk as hell” performance to the venue.
On Saturday, Fat Out brings a three-stage takeover from 3pm-late. Joining the bill is punk collective Tokky Horror, Brixton’s gothic dancehall star GAIKA, Judy Brush of Dorcha & Pretty Grim, genre-bending trio CLT DRP, Dawn Terry and cosmic-pop duo, Dischi. Also, exclusively for 2023, Fat Out will welcome Deptford-based experimental rock drummer Charles Hayward and New Jersey-based MC and hip hop artist MC Dälek.
In Mirage Bar at Islington Mill, cabaret performances from Maedb Joy and Natalie and the Monarchy will entertain festival goers into the evening. The ‘sexquisite’ glamorous show has been hailed as “powerful and educational” in sell-out shows across both Manchester and London.
From 2-10pm on Sunday, Fat Out presents a day party curated alongside Alphaville that will bring electro-punk three piece Yossari Baby and sound artist and composer Hayley Suviste to its stages. Joining them is long-standing former member of Manchester noise experimentalists Gnod, Marlene Ribeiro, who will create a dreamlike sphere of psychedelia, while Agathe Max weaves unique sound textures, and The Seer will create a radical sound performance piece, too.
Returning for a second day, Charles Hayward will be joined by some of the most exciting and forward-thinking young experimental musicians in his band Abstract Concrete, whilst Shrek 666 brings fetish, magic, monstrosity and surrealism.
Further line-up announcements will be made in the coming weeks, that will include Thursday 21st September too.
