Tattu is an independently run family business launched by two brothers back in 2015. Taking its name from the tattoo style artwork that gives this Spinningfields institution its good looks, and the word ‘Tatau’, meaning “make a mark” in ancient eastern culture, the Manchester location has given rise to a number of others elsewhere in the country, which is a sign of just how good things are here. Specialising in fusion Chinese-modern creations, the menu matches interior design for intricacies and captivating presentation, with the iconic blossom tree, sat in the middle of the dining room, among the stand out features inside.

In terms of food, this is the place for handmade dim sum and stunning small plates. Signature dishes include Caramel Soy Aged Beef fillet, and Seven Spice Seared Tuna, both of which give a good idea of the kitchen’s determination to use the best possible ingredients and innovate. Other options include Mongolian Mock Beef, Sugar Snap and Broccoli Salad, Salt & Pepper Aubergine, and Wok Fired Angry Bird. Tasting menus, made up of ‘Waves’ rather than courses, are also available, offering a A Taste of Tattu with an array of varied creations being brought to the table for guests to savour.

If the eating was excellent, the drinks definitely keep pace. Expertly conceived and crafted cocktails are a given here, with many unique glassfuls to be had. For example, the Shi Cosmo, Golden Frenzy, Mariners Mai Tai, and Pure Heart Picante. Some riff on classics, others are entirely Tattu’s devising, which is a big reason everyone should try at least one when they first sit down. Less mixed, but just as sophisticated, the extensive wine list spans old to new world and has been hand-picked to complement the recipes. A private dining experience in The Parlour is also available for up to 35 seated guests, 60 for canapés, and private bookings are welcome for the entire establishment.
