Plans for a new ‘Tebay-style’ motorway service station and 100-room hotel have been given the go ahead. The new development will be built on green belt land between J7 and J8 of the M56, close to Bowdon Roundabout.

It follows a lengthy battle to get the plans approved. Cheshire East Council originally approved the plans back in 2023, but had faced objections around more potential traffic in Altrincham and Knutsford. The objections were subsequently removed.

The services and hotel will be operated by the Westmorland family who run the much-loved Tebay service station in Cumbria, which means motorists and visitors can expect a more stylish service station.

Tebay is known for its timber architecture, woodland views, farm shop and the ‘proper food’ served from their various kitchens, as well as plush rooms to stay in.

The plans were formally approved by Housing and Planning Minister Matthew Pennycock on 5 March, saying that the need for a service station in the area was ‘indisputable’.

It’s possible that the services could be finished as early as late 2026 or early 2027.
