NORTHERN QUARTER resident and long-time Manchester businessman, Ross Mackenzie, today announces the extension of his Black Dog Ballroom brand.
Mackenzie’s late night hangout, which opened in 2009, fast became a favourite and has since won many accolades including Best Bar of 2010 by the Manchester Evening News’ CityLife and Best Bar of 2011 by Manchester Confidential.
The speakeasy, diner and poolroom serves food from 12pm until 1am, daily. Using local produce, the menu is the invention of Anthony Fielden of the Northern Quarter Restaurant, run by Black Dog Ballroom co-owner Jobe Ferguson, and has been designed to capture the flavours and textures of New York. It offers pizzas, burgers, hot dogs and salads late into the night along with unbeatable cocktails and a pin-code protected private member’s bar which is a haven for regulars seeking late night escape from the crowds of the city.
The partnership enjoyed further success in 2011 with the triumphant launch of Tiki Dive Bar and Caribbean Rum, The Liars Club, in the old Purple Pussy Cat site underneath Mojo. The new concept, managed by ‘Captain’ Lyndon Higginson, has become a firm favourite for cocktail loving Mancunians seeking a tropical hideaway from the gloomy streets of the city above.
The second Black Dog Ballroom is set to open mid-May 2012 in the venue previously occupied by Pure Space on New Wakefield Street just off Oxford Road (11/13 New Wakefield St, M1). Work to refurbish the venue will begin imminently and the three floors will be transformed into another New York style bar this time targeting the city’s ever present student population from its position on the Oxford Road corridor.
The bar, which is again stylishly designed by Manchester based agency Start JudgeGill, will be spread over three floors, including a basement nightclub, titled Underdog, that can be hired out to club promoters. This will feature a state-of-the-art Funktion-one sound system. The top floor will boast a roof terrace complete with BBQ station to serve the already famous New York style burgers wrapped in wax paper.
Like its Northern Quarter counterpart the bar will be open until 4am but will open daily at 10am to cater for breakfasts and brunch.
Black Dog Ballroom will create over 30 jobs in the city and the team has begun the search to find the right management team to launch the venue and brand to this new audience. “Our first step now we have made this announcement is to find the right people to work with myself and my existing team. They will need to understand the Black Dog Ballroom brand inside out but have the insight required to bring it alive in this area of the city which is relatively new to us.”
The team is not content to rest here and is already on the look out for further sites to develop the Black Dog Ballroom and The Liars Club concepts across the North West.
