The partnership which follows the summer cocktail collaboration with Salford based gin distillery FOUR SIS4ERS, is a testament to The Lowry Hotel’s aim to use only locally sourced ingredients.
The Salford Rum Company has recently launched their small batch rum that was inspired by the spices imported into Salford historical docks. The rum is sold in eye-catching ceramic bottles, with a labelled designed by local artist Dave Draws.
The Salford Rum Company was started by two friends James Harrison and Tommy Gaughan, who wanted to create a small batch, column distilled rum that they themselves would want to drink. The result is an expertly blended golden rum spiced with vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon and dried fruits.
The Salford Rum Company is currently, on their second batch of 200. The rum was previously only available by private request, with the partnership at The Lowry Hotel being the first time the rum is sold in a hotel and bar.
James and Tommy, both Manchester natives, were inspired by the history of Salford's Pamona docks, a major import hub in the 18th & 19th century.
As a major trading centre for cotton from the Manchester mills, Salford's docks were teeming with new spices and flavours and most importantly rum from the Caribbean. Incidentally, Pamona Docks themselves were named for the Roman goddess of fruit trees, who is often pictured with citrus fruits like those used to spice rum.
The cocktails will be available to the public in The River Bar from 1st October. Starting from £15 the range will feature The Lowry Hotel’s twist on traditional favourites, ranging from a Rum Punch to a golden Piña colada.
