The team behind much loved tapas restaurants Porta have announced they will open a new spot in West Didsbury.

The location on Lapwing Lane was home to Simon Rimmer’s veggie eatery Greens for over 30 years, but has been empty since the restaurant sadly closed in January.

Now, Porta owners Ben and Joe Wright have announced that they will bring their fresh, vibrant tapas to the area, and will carry on the Porta tradition of relaxed vibes and great food.

Boasting a menu of truly authentic Spanish classics, it will serve all home made dishes and daily specials in a totally informal environment, mirroring the tiny Spanish bars that inspired it. Porta remains ardently ‘no bookings’, but with an ice-cold sherry in hand, the occasional short queue is all part of the experience.

The restaurateur brothers opened the first Porta in Chester in 2012, before launching the Altrincham site in 2016 and Salford in 2018.

Ben said: “We’d had our eyes open for another site for a while but really struggled to find the right thing. Then, just when we weren’t looking, this amazing spot came along! We’re really excited to be part of the community in West Didsbury – the people we’ve met just in the last few days have been so, so welcoming and positive, people popping their head in and saying hi – it’s been really reassuring.”

“We feel that we can bring something different but really complimentary to the existing brilliant restaurants and bars in the area. We’ve got a fantastic team running Porta and it’s a really exciting time for the business.”

Joe added: “It’s an amazing building, and its history is fascinating. We’ve visited Greens a few times over the years and are big fans of what the two Simon’s have achieved. The pressure is on us to do it justice!”

Porta will open in West Didsbury in November 2024.
