Typical dining on a double decker bus usually constitutes eating a cheesy chip naan at the back of the 142 on your way back from a night out – but Real Junk Food Manchester are bringing fine dining to the peoples of Manchester in the hope to highlight the amount of food we waste and to campaign for change in our food system to make it fairer, more accessible and less wasteful.
Real Junk Food are joining forces with new social enterprise Commonplace to offer fine dining on a reconditioned double decker bus in the beautiful Alexandra park on Wednesday 24th May.
Housed on the bus, Commonplace is a mobile community event space offering a unique venue for community groups, charities, start-ups and businesses to host pop-up events and one-of-a kind gatherings. Its hope is to challenge the perceptions of community space as outdated and ‘uncool’ by offering an affordable, mobile space for fellow social enterprises and community organisations to host their events.
Real Junk Food Manchester is also a locally run social enterprise that sources food that would otherwise go to waste, and manages to create restaurant quality meals for anyone and everyone, on a pay as-you-feel basis. In the last year they have delivered weddings, gala dinners, pop-up restaurants, and now have turned their hands at fine dining on the Commonplace bus.
The evening will feature 2 sittings, one at 5.30pm and one at 7.15pm, and places are strictly limited. Places are free to reserve and meals will be served on a pay-as-you-feel basis. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will be available too.
The menu will be decided entirely by what food is intercepted in the days leading up to the event, as the chefs create beautiful dishes entirely from wasted ingredients. With an estimated 15 million tonnes of food wasted in Britain every year, the aim of the event is to demonstrate the senselessness and scale of food waste, while doing something positive and social with the current outputs of our broken food system.
Tickets are FREE and available here.
