When life-long friends Luke and Luke (it was fate, wasn’t it?) met back in school, they knew they’d end up doing something together. A few years later, Woodys Street Food – their homegrown burger and hoagie concept – outgrew the kitchen, they ended up somewhere unexpected: the local leisure centre.
Sale Sport Club on Clarendon Crescent is a home to cricket, tennis and hockey facilities, all your yoga and pilates classes, and now, one of the best smash burgers in Manchester (plus all the necessary wings, fries, subs and dips to make it a feast of outrageous proportions).

Everything in moderation, eh?
Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you’ll find them squashing burgers, cramming hoagies, and loading fries with steak and wings. Their most popular dish is the bacon jam burger, where two patties are sandwiched together with a bacon jam, accompanied by cheese and a secret sauce. The patties are pressed super thin, to get those crispy caramelised edges.

The hot honey chicken hoagie is another gem, a generously filled sub roll with buttermilk chicken, melted cheese, a suggestion of salad, and the eponymous hot honey. The chopped cheese sub, a classic New York deli speciality with ground beef and onion, is another heavyweight on the menu.
For the extravagant, there’s a surf n turf box meal with sirloin steak, grilled prawns and a chimichurri sauce, served on top of near-perfect fries. It’s a feast, and you won’t feel short-changed for your £16.50.

You can order online or ‘eat in’, an experience that probably hits differently after your tennis session or spin class.
But you’ll have to be speedy – most weekends they sell out.
