The Smithfield Market Tavern on Swan Street has been named ‘Pub of the Year 2022’ by the independent Manchester consumer organisation Central Manchester CAMRA.

The CAMRA lot noted the pub as being “a fabulous, friendly, traditional, cosy boozer with a contemporary feel” – and we couldn’t agree more!

The Smithfield Market Tavern was praised for its reasonably priced booze, good selection of beers and friendly staff. The Swan Street Pub was also recognised for its nice outdoor seating area and live music every Sunday.

The pub is the tap house of local brewery Blackjack, and so you’ll always find a decent selection of their brews in there, alongside guest ales on the kegs and casks.

There’s been a pub on the corner here for more than 170 years, as it once served the market workers of the old Smithfield Market, but when that shut down and was demolished back in the early 70s – the pub sort of struggled along for a few years – until the revitalisation by Blackjack.

The brewers took over the historic boozer back in 2015, transforming it from a bit of a dodgy dive into a stunning traditional pub – complete with hand-painted signage outside and a rather eclectic interior.

The CAMRA organisation aims to promote small pubs and increase the quality and availability of real ales in Manchester. Winning this award is a real testament to the NQ boozer and we think it deserves all the hype it gets.
