There are DJs who follow trends and turn out sets like a robotic, well-oiled machine, and then there are DJs like Nicolas Lutz. The singular, Uruguayan-born selector has built a cult-like following not through social media gimmicks or performative behind-the-decks shape-throwing, but through a borderline obsessive dedication to finding records that nobody else has.
On Sunday 5 April (Happy Easter to all), he arrives at The White Hotel for an extended set that promises to dive deep into the weirder corners of his record bag. If you’ve spent any time in Salford’s favourite windowless bunker, you’ll know it’s the ideal setting for Lutz’s particular brand of cosmic techno and abstract house. It’s the kind of music that demands a dark room and a long duration to fully make sense.
Lutz is one of the few names in the industry who can hold a floor for several hours without ever leaning on a recognisable hit.
