Egyptian Lover and FREAKENSTEIN

One of electro’s true originators lands in Manchester as Egyptian Lover joins FREAKENSTEIN for a late-night session built around drum machines, futuristic funk and seriously heavy bass.

Born Gregory Broussard, The Egyptian Lover emerged from the Los Angeles’ early hip-hop and electro scenes in the 1980s, becoming highly conversant with the Roland TR-808 drum machine and helping define a sound that fused Kraftwerk-inspired electronics with funk, rap and dancefloor energy. Tracks including Egypt, Egypt and Freak-A-Holic became staples of West Coast electro, while his live performances have kept that unmistakable analogue sound moving through clubs for more than four decades.

Joining him on the bill at Strangeways mainstay Hidden is FREAKENSTEIN, the alter ego of UK DJ and producer Tristan Da Cunha, a legend of the Leeds scene. Drawing from electro, breaks, techno and the lineage of artists including Underground Resistance and Egyptian Lover himself, FREAKENSTEIN sets are fast, freaky (as you’d expect) and physical, with plenty of sci-fi electronics and machine funk thrown into the mix.

MCR’s very own Rhod Parry completes the line-up, with REC. bringing all three together for six hours of electro.
