In 2008, Dr. Cliff Arnall, a researcher at Cardiff University, calculated that the third Monday of January was officially the most depressing day of the year. The prediction was based on a formula he developed, incorporating weather, consumer debt from Christmas, and failed New Year’s resolutions, concluding that the nation is set to hit rock bottom on Monday 21st January.
As studies have shown, exercise and a good diet are proven ways to combat depression and so local family business Caffeine & Co, a coffee shop based in St. James Place, is inviting the people of the city centre to join in with a Zumba lesson in Albert Square to dance the blues away. They will also be offering those taking part a nutritious free lunch in the coffee shop afterwards.

Phil Howells from Caffeine and Co said ‘Good food is a really important factor in staying healthy and happy. We will be serving our delicious Roast Butternut Squash Soup with a homemade Scandinavian style Spelt, Rye and Oatbran Loaf on Monday. The soup is rich in vitamins A and C, high in antioxidants and low GI –really good for you but also delicious. Along with the high fibre bread it is a healthy, delicious and filling lunch option, which is not only comforting, but also packed full of vitamins to ward off depression and illness in the wet, chilly Manchester winter.
