Manchester Photographer Shay Rowan shares his thoughts and pictures from the recent Beth Jeans Houghton show at Deaf Institute.
Surrounded by a band of musicians whose on stage dress consists of an assortment of top hats, camouflage jackets, Hawaiian shirts and what is later described as a psychedelic baby grow it would be easy to imagine any ordinary performer could feel overwhelmed.
But then Beth Jeans Houghton is no ordinary performer and dressed in a red and black polka dot suit with her bleached blonde hair piled high on her head she looks for all the world like Disney’s interpretation of Marie Antoinette!

Eccentricity also prevails in her music and onstage rapport with the crowd but to great effect as she has the talent and personality to carry it off and the voice to match.
Showcasing her new album – “Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose” – she balances pop melodies with baroque arrangements and cascading vocals with galloping beats – her voice able to shift from a husky growl to an operatic delivery.
Unusual in every sense and all the better for it.
