Sankeys – Friday 19th & Saturday 20th August
Sankeys stride steadfastly towards September with another classic weekend of music lined up. Such is the success of their winning formula that an application should be made to the patents office, with Sankeys perfecting the balance between devilish main room intensity and bass-drenched rippling underground grooves. And this weekend sees this showcased with deft aplomb once again, with two line-ups tailor crafted to enhance anyone’s weekend music adventures.
Friday 19th August sees German production super duo Tube and Berger slay the Sankeys rave fortress. 2004 was the year they exploded into the dance music consensus with their huge ‘Straight Ahead’ banger, featuring the vocal talents of former Pretenders chanteuse Chrissie Hynde and the classic combination of dancefloor dynamite and a catchy hook, ensuring a worldwide smash and a platform for the duo to build upon.
They certainly haven’t flattered to deceive. Offering a huge salvo of hits as T&B and also pseudonym Babylon Robots, they’ve also incorporated live remixing and bootlegging into their DJ sets, whilst even bringing electric guitars to sync with their record playing; creating a huge main room smash. Jason Herd, Manchester’s main room house don and frequent Sankeys stalwart, supports their theatrics.
The day after it’s the turn for two live performances to showcase the new direction of modern house and techno music. James Teej and Saytek will both be performing, Teej the Canadian upstart who has blessed Radio Slave’s Rekids imprint with a slew of refined grooves over the past few years. Somewhere between Ricardo Vilalobos’ measured grooves and Jamie Lidell’s off kilter soul, Teej’s records and live shows have that rare sense of electronic soul, tearing the heart out of the machine and adding a human vibe to dancefloor driven electronica.
And as for his support for the evening, Saytek is the masterful producer favoured by the Zoo Project, Fabric and Belgium’s Cafe D’Anvers, also turns up for duty. His intricately crafted house and techno provides the perfect soundtrack to sneak effortlessly into the early hours with, whilst totemic rising star and Sankeys resident Darius Syrossian ensures the beats are jerking from the off.
Saturday’s Treehouse session includes a two like-minded labels on the rise, Los Angeles’ Culprit and London’s Leftroom, bringing their hedonistic party know-how. Nottingham born INXEC has been carving out a reputation as one of the most innovative producers in house and techno during the last few years, with his tracks getting hammered by the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Sven Vath, Richie Hawtin and Luciano. Leftroom’s head honcho Matt Tolfrey has been fronting off-centre house and minimal techno from everyone including Subb-an, Jozif and Audio Jack. He’s not a bad DJ himself too; drawing on everything from deep house and techno, through to stripped down beats, he’s spawned his own hybrid strain of electronic funk which enraptures the masses.
Don’t forget Sankeys’ own two hot-shot residents, Ellesse and Jozef K.
You just know this one is going to be a pearler.
