Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has announced the next round of funding for the city’s bike library scheme, aiming to expand the current 29 libraries and boost access to cycling. Community groups and organisations can now apply for grants up to £5,000 to establish new bike libraries or enhance existing ones. Bike libraries allow people to borrow bikes for free, promoting the use of Greater Manchester’s Bee Network cycling routes.
Dame Sarah Storey, Active Travel Commissioner, emphasised the significance of bike libraries in enabling more people to experience cycling. The grant is designed to support the creation or expansion of schemes, rather than purchasing bikes. Funds can be allocated for practical cycling tools, facilities, or bike mechanic training. TfGM’s Active Travel team also offers additional support to promote bike libraries through a branded marketing package.
While the current focus is on standard bikes, TfGM plans to gradually expand the available options at bike libraries, including non-standard cycles, by collaborating with organisations like Wheels for All.
