UK nightlife, social and drinking cultures are changing. Fast. According to a 2024 YouGov survey, around 44% alcohol drinkers aged between 18 and 24 say they regularly order low or non-alcoholic drinks. A year later, a separate study found almost half of young adults don’t drink booze at all. At Hinterland, the team believe they have created the ideal response to this — a bar which isn’t about getting drunk, and doesn’t serve anything above 0% ABV.

“Skip the booze, skip the small talk” the tagline reads. Professing to foster a new approach to socialising and finding friendship in a city of millions, the crew claim to provide a space for people to “enjoy good company without the need for alcohol.” Don’t think for a second that means everyone’s on the water, though. Hinterland is all about high quality sober spirits, mixers, beers and cocktails, alongside a broad selection of herbal and caffeinated teas and coffees, hot chocolates — house, 51% dark, chilli, salted and white — alongside various other milky blends. That would be Masala, golden or pink Chai, spiced pumpkin and Japanese matcha, to be specific. And then there’s the food.

In terms of Hinterland’s now famous pours, these are all made using the very finest ingredients available and priced accordingly. Trust us when we say you’ll not find better, more flavourful non-alcs anywhere in town. Or a pint of something equally innocent. As for the food, things are equally ethical and contemporary if you want them to be, with beef-less patties, cauliflower burgers, curried broths, and vegetarian sushi all ensuring that you’ll wake up the next day feeling hangover and guilt free. Of course, meat lovers can still get their fill if they really want it, from Sunday roasts to carnivorous brunches, and back again. Finally, a busy event schedule runs from philosophy nights to acoustic showcases, which only adds to the appeal.
