It’s not often a new Chinese restaurant opens in Manchester and immediately sets out to redefine expectations. But that’s precisely what Home Chinese is doing, quietly and confidently, on the edge of the Gay Village. The vision comes from Jason Wu, who, after years of hospitality experience and a longstanding connection to the city, has brought something that’s both familiar and refreshingly different. Inspired by its sister site near Leeds University but developed with a new level of polish, this is Chinese food with an updated lens — not a revolution, but a gentle, stylish rethink.

The menu here draws primarily on Cantonese and Szechuan influences — big on comfort, but with plenty of flair. Dim sum is a major focus, made entirely in-house by a dedicated chef, meaning zero shortcuts and no frozen bags in sight. Delicate steamed cheung fun wraps tiger prawns in a vivid pink casing, custard and mango bao are as playful as they are rich, and mock duck bean curd rolls reveal why this place is already a word-of-mouth favourite. A massive array of dumplings sits beside old-school congee, roast meats (yes, done on-site), and regional hot pots, including duck blood tofu if you’re feeling adventurous.

The space is just as considered as the food. Soft greys and warm woods wrap around geometric flooring and industrial lighting, while a private dining room — all brick and low-slung chandeliers — brings a touch of drama. It’s not quite fine dining, but Home Chinese still plays it smarter than most. Think elevated service, a curated playlist, and a wine list handpicked by Jason himself, including emerging Chinese bottles alongside French and Italian heavyweights. Cocktails are coming soon too — once the right bartender turns up.

With so much on offer, one visit won’t scratch the surface. And that’s the point. Home Chinese is a place to return to, to explore more with each meal, from the spicy ma po tofu to the salt and pepper aubergine crisped to chip shop glory. For anyone seeking a new perspective on a beloved cuisine — with care, style and a side of cheung fun — this is a very welcome addition to Manchester’s ever-evolving food scene.
