There are certain things in life we can all be sure of. In Manchester, you’ll always get a high number of rainy days per month. And it’s also true that you’ll struggle to find a better kebab anywhere in Britain, and the best spots take some tracking down. Like jumping on the 192 bus or southbound train services from Piccadilly railway station to the south-east-central suburb of Levenshulme. Here, you’ll find an abundance of excellent – and notably independent — bars and eateries. And what locals believe to be the finest shawarma in the region.
That’s saying something, but who are we to tell people how they should think? Whatever your truth, Levenshulme Bakery has all the trappings of a kebab spot you need in your life. Nestled on the corner of Stockport Road and Belvoir Avenue, smack bang in the centre of the district, the bright red and off-white signage is as hard to miss as the simple messaging — Open 7 Days A Week for panini, falafel, fatair (or fatayer to some), lahmajun, and pizza. Not to mention those shawarmas everyone has been banging on about. Just the ticket for a street-side refuel if you’re exploring the neighbourhood, with a handful of pavement seats on hand if you don’t want to take away.
The secret to Levenshulme Bakery’s success, and ever-growing legend, is just how fresh everything here is. As Manchester’s Finest discovered when filming our video, ‘The Undisputed King of Kebabs’. Shawarma meat is loaded onto a spit each morning, meaning every serving tastes exactly as it should — succulent, tender, but with just enough crisp for some extra bite. Then there are the samoons, a yeasty Iranian bread, also prepared and baked here daily. Throw in — or throw on — refreshing salad leaves, tomatoes, pickled chillies, insanely good chilli and garlic sauces, and there’s every chance you’ll be back again. And again.
