Tucked away in King’s Court, a behind-the-high-street cluster of pubs and bars in Altrincham, Libero takes the sports bar blueprint and shrinks it right down to the essentials — then adds a heap of personality. With a capacity of just 16 seats, this place feels more like stepping into someone’s living room than a commercial venue, though the energy on a match day can rival anywhere in the city. Founder Rooney (yes, really) opened the bar more than six years ago, creating a small-but-mighty home for sport lovers that’s as inclusive as it is passionate about the game.

Three screens are positioned to give every seat a clear view, with a fourth discreetly mounted in the loo to ensure nobody misses a moment. While football takes centre stage, the schedule isn’t exclusive – all sports get airtime here, and the clientele reflects that variety. Far from being a lads-only domain, Libero welcomes everyone, including a strong LGBTQ+ following, with the only ban in place reserved for ‘knobheads’. This approach has made it a firm pre- and post-match meeting point for Altrincham F.C. fans, with the walls lined in memorabilia from Rooney’s own collection.

Beer-wise, the taps tend to champion local names such as Cloudwater and Pomona Island, alongside a few German lagers in honour of Rooney’s grandmother. On a regular day, it’s a one-person operation behind the bar, but when big games hit the calendar, the action spills out into the shared courtyard, with the atmosphere swelling accordingly.
