Chorlton has changed dramatically in recent times, and the row of businesses where you’ll find Lily’s is a relatively new addition. In typical ‘cum-Hardy style, the modern parade is mainly home to independent businesses, so it’s possible to get your ride fixed at the commendable Charity Bike Shop, pick up some luxury beers at The Epicurean, and then fill your bags — and boots — with incredible homemade Indian vegetarian and vegan treats next door at Lily’s Deli. Whether you’re looking for savoury snacks or sweet bites, this place has them all and then some.
The Chorlton branch is a relatively recent chapter to the Lily’s story, but the tale itself stretches way back to 1972, when husband and wife team PG and Lilawati Sachdev first opened a business on Cotton Street East in Ashton-Under-Lyne. Everything was made on site by the pair, whose family soon became involved to support the growing success. Sadly, Lilawati — or Lily — passed away, and a restaurant then opened in her memory. Authentic as they come, today the firm remains a firm favourite across the city region, pulling people in from miles around thanks to the quality of its produce. Chefs plucked from across India, reflecting the country’s broad cuisine.
On the menu in the Chorlton deli, you’ll find Chaats and Savouries of all kinds, freshly made to order, alongside some of Lily’s famous pies. Indian Sweets, or Mithai, are also available and many come free from animal products for those who are sticking to a vegan diet. Behind this, ‘grab & go’ items are available, including curries, daals, and chapatis, and if you fancy trying your hand at making dishes at home there’s a grocery store-load of provisions and ingredients to go at. Hot and cold drinks are sold, too, making this a real one-stop answer for a healthy and flavour-filled lunch, or larder restock.
