Just when you think Manchester’s independent bakery scene couldn’t get any more impressive, you go and discover that Altrincham, a market town in Trafford, around 10 miles south of Piccadilly, is home to some of the best bread and dough businesses in the UK. Easy to reach via bus, Metrolink tram, and local train services, if you’re heading down to this renowned foodie hotspot then family-run MOST Bakery should be a priority. Situated on busy Cross Street, one of the area’s main shopping strips, this place has a stellar reputation that has now spread across the entire city region.

From the moment you step inside the corner shop unit you’ll know this was a very good decision. MOST has that inimitable smell of “everything from scratch”, so you’ll immediately find the stomach rumbling at the thought of the delicious bread being made here. Although that’s really just scratching the surface. The coffee also adds to the irresistible aromas, but if you prefer a proper cup of English tea that can also be arranged, alongside a number of other hot and cold drinks if the mood strikes.

Inspired by Parisian viennoiserie and pâtisserie, the main focus is on sugary and sweet treats, and the constantly changing selection is guaranteed to blow you away. So, you might find a Mont Blanc Tart — pastry filled with whipped Chantilly cream and meringue, topped with a vermicelli-style chestnut cream and fresh chestnut. Or Mini Egg Brownies. How about Oreo and Biscoff Creme Scotch Egg and Apple Cider Hot Cross Buns for Easter? And Rhubarb & Custard or Blood Orange tarts? Not forgetting the green pastry, white chocolate filled, candy cane-topped Christmas Trees Croissants. You get the point — very special stuff, and a must visit if you’re in the neighbourhood. In other words: highly recommended and well worth seeking out.
