Manchester can catch people out pretty easily. Chorlton-on-Medlock is not Chorlton, for example. Whitworth Street is nowhere near Whitworth Park. The Lowry Hotel is a fair old trek (and tram ride) from the Lowry Centre. And once you head into the suburbs and boroughs, the chance of two roads sharing the same name, in completely different parts of the region, exponentially grows. Oxford Road Cafe is another example – a charming neighbourhood eatery which, despite the name, isn’t on Oxford Road — one of the city’s most famous thoroughfares. Instead, you’ll find it deep south in Altrincham, one of the region’s most prominent foodie destinations.

Serving meals to eat-in or take-out, Oxford Road Cafe is open morning through to evening so let’s begin with breakfast. French toast, veggie, vegan, and man up (basically with a few extra of everything) are all available. That’s in addition to the Stu special smoked salmon (with scrambled eggs and asparagus spears), breakfast power wrap, organic yoghurt, Danny’s rarebit and kedgeree — emphasising how broad the choice is. The excellent sausage and bacon, alongside other bits, are also available in barms and butties. Later in the day, the popular choices change to more lunch-style sandwiches; brie & cranberry, ham with wholegrain mustard and rocket, avocado with houmous, tomato chutney and lettuce.

Elsewhere, hot sandwiches include southern fried chicken, goat’s cheese with caramelised onion and beetroot, sweet potato falafel with roast pepper and avocado, alongside a number of clubs. Alternatively, punt for one of the excellent burgers (lamb, ORC zinging — chicken breast and spices — or the vegan, to name just three). Or go the full hog and choose a fillet steak (with various types of fries), a pasta, nacho, burrito or chilli dish. Prefer something more Far Eastern? No worries, poke bowls and bao buns are on offer. Throw in some ace sweet treats, a separate kids menu, great coffee, indulgent hot chocolate and milkshakes, slushes and fresh juices, and nobody’s going hungry (or thirsty) here.
