“Home of the pint. Land of the third.” Port Street Beer House is up there with the funniest drinking holes in the Northern Quarter, with so many examples of true wit used to sell barrels of the good stuff. Thankfully, though, it’s not all talk. This self-professed “woke pub” is a favourite around town for a number of very good reasons, and each of these occupies a different tap. Some are permanent residents, others here on rotation, making room for newcomers every few weeks, which keeps our options fresh.

Pouring “craft beers — from here, there and everywhere”, it’s hard to think of many spots that have such a broad selection and so much consistency. Hence the popularity of tables spread across a traditional wood-lined ground floor, larger first floor, and cute semi-hidden faux back garden. And it’s arguably out there, on a warm summer evening, when you really get a true sense for just how universal Port Street Beer House is — pulling in pretty much every type of customer you’re likely to see out and about in the Northern Quarter.

Onto the main attraction, trying to list specific beers and ales seems slightly reductive. This is the sort of place to come and discover, then decide what you’re regular glass is going to be. Fancy a Caribbean Chocolate Cake stout? How about an Evil Twin NY Cinnamon Baked Pear Sour? Looking for a less complicated Pils? Maybe a classic IPA, DPA, witbier, amber or porter? And that’s before we get to Helles. Never stuck for choice, there’s also a great specialist spirit list waiting to explore for those who dare to tread. And anyone who likes a chaser with their perfectly poured pint of real beer. In the Great List of Manchester City Centre Boozers, this is undoubtedly one of the best.
