Since opening in 2018, Porta has been quietly proving that great Spanish tapas can feel right at home in Greater Manchester. Originally founded in Chester by brothers Ben and Joe Wright, this casual, walk-in-only spot on Chapel Street in Salford follows the same winning formula as its sister sites in Altrincham and Didsbury—simple, high-quality ingredients, a buzzing atmosphere, and a true love for Iberian food and drink.

Set in a converted bank on Bexley Square, the space is cosy and intimate, with a mix of bar stools, small tables, and an upstairs mezzanine that fills up fast. The aim? To replicate the feel of a classic Spanish tapas bar, where plates arrive as they’re ready, wine flows freely, and conversation hums in the background. The terrace outside is a great spot for sunny days, while inside, the mix of wood, warm lighting, and an open kitchen keeps things lively yet laid-back.

The menu is concise but expertly executed, featuring classic tapas dishes alongside seasonal specials that highlight quality produce. Expect small plates bursting with bold flavours, from fresh seafood to rich, slow-cooked meats and vibrant vegetarian options. Everything is made in-house, and with executive chef Jose Garzón overseeing the menu, attention to detail is evident in every bite.

Of course, no tapas experience is complete without drinks, and Porta delivers with a carefully curated selection of Spanish wines, sherries, and beers. Whether it’s a glass of Tempranillo, a crisp Albariño, or a chilled vermut on ice, the drinks menu perfectly complements the food, ensuring that every visit feels like a taste of Spain, right in Salford.

With its warm, unpretentious atmosphere, expertly prepared dishes, and genuine love for Spanish cuisine, Porta is the kind of place you can visit twice a week and never tire of. Whether you’re dropping in for a quick bite or settling in for a long, leisurely meal, it’s a neighbourhood gem that captures the true spirit of tapas—simple, sociable, and always satisfying.
