When Porta opened its doors in West Didsbury in 2023, it marked the fourth addition to Ben and Joe Wright’s ever-expanding tapas empire, following successes in Chester, Altrincham, and Salford. Taking over the former Greens site on Lapwing Lane, this branch carries the same no-frills, high-quality approach that has made its sister sites firm favourites.
Porta is not about reinvention, but rather delivering the classics perfectly. Inspired by the traditional tapas bars of Barcelona and Madrid, it’s a place where great food, well-chosen drinks, and relaxed hospitality come together in an informal, walk-in-only setting. The small plates menu is short but impeccably curated, with a mix of rustic Spanish flavours and simple, expertly cooked ingredients. Expect chargrilled meats, seafood, and vegetable dishes that highlight bold, uncomplicated flavours. A specials board keeps things interesting, featuring seasonal ingredients and inventive combinations.
The wine, vermouth, and sherry lists are a focal point, offering carefully selected bottles from Spain’s most exciting vineyards. Whether it’s a crisp Albariño, a robust Rioja, or a chilled glass of sweet Pedro Ximénez, the drinks are as much a reason to visit as the food. Spanish cervezas and gin & tonics round out the offering, bringing a true Iberian bar experience to one of Manchester’s most food-focused neighbourhoods.
The interior is simple and inviting, with dark green walls, warm wood tones, and soft lighting creating a cosy, intimate space that encourages slow, sociable dining. Whether you’re popping in for a couple of dishes and a glass of wine or settling in for a long evening of tapas, Porta nails the relaxed, no-fuss charm of a true Spanish tapas bar.
