There’s a lot to feel proud about Manchester for. The city has a long history of supporting worker’s rights pushing back against imperialistic ideologues, and pushing for genuine equality. Birthplace of the Suffragette movement, which secured a vote for women over 30 in 1918, and then all women in 1928, this is also the cotton-dependent city that downed tools in a bid to support emancipation of slaves in the US, and throughout the 20th and 21st Centuries, has been considered a safe place for the LGBTQ+ community. Queer Lit, which lays claim to stocking the largest range of gay, lesbian and trans books in Europe, is a prime example of what we’re talking about.
Growing organically from a small but ambitious and expertly curated online store to brick and mortar heaven for lovers of LGBTQ+ literature and non-fiction, poetry and more, you’ll find an incredible 4,500 titles at Queer Lit to pore over. Not to mention a large selection of cards and gift ideas, including clothing, rainbow banners and pronoun pins, to name but a few items in stock.
Voted Best New Business at the 2021 North West LGBTQ+ Business Awards, Queer Lit’s vast catalogue is available online for web orders, and the website publishes a constant stream of blogs, creative writing and reviews of new releases, making it an essential digital hub for queer culture. It’s also worth noting the store’s role in politics and campaign work. For example, the team once sent copies of books on trans history to more than 300 British MPs in a bid to improve visibility and garner support for a marginalised minority, educating policymakers on the circumstances, actions and situations that have shaped the community. So, just like our hometown — a UNESCO City of Literature no less — there’s a lot to feel proud about this vital operation.
