Just off the well-worn path — and we mean that literally — lies one of Greater Manchester’s most scenic and satisfying little secrets. Riverbank Coffee isn’t just off the beaten track, it is the beaten track: nestled along a picturesque stretch of the River Mersey between Stretford and Urmston, and only reachable on foot, bike or – for some – paddleboard.

There’s no road access, no car park, and no fuss. But what there is more than makes up for it: serious coffee, cracking sausage rolls, and a welcome as warm as the pies on the counter.

Born out of lockdown wanderings and a simple red caravan, Riverbank Coffee was the brainchild of mother-and-daughter duo Jackie and Jenny, who noticed how busy the Transpennine Trail had become with walkers, cyclists and outdoor folk looking for some fresh air and fresh caffeine. Spotting the gap, they built a retreat for passers-by to pause, refuel, and enjoy the view — and they haven’t looked back.

The caravan’s still part of the setup, but the café has grown into a small collection of rustic huts and cabins, blending into the trees like something from a Scandi forest break. Everything’s made on-site — from the blends of tea and coffee to the daily bakes and savoury snacks. Whether you arrive with mud on your boots, spokes spinning or paddle in hand, the signature sausage rolls and homemade pies are a non-negotiable pit stop. Sweet tooth? Their Biscoff blondies and brownies have achieved cult status.

Despite being a good 15–20 minute walk from the nearest road, the place never stops. Locals know, word has spread, and on sunny weekends the queue can snake into the trees. But the vibe remains chilled, the service personal, and the surroundings unbeatable.

Open seven days a week, Riverbank is pure trail-side gold.
