If you’re unfamiliar with the Welsh language the meaning of Siop Shop might be something of a mystery. So let’s clarify. Siop translates into English as ‘Shop’, meaning this Northern Quarter gem tucked away on Tib Street is actually called Shop Shop. None of which makes it any easier to guess what the place does. Established by Lucy Jackson and Iwan Roberts, names some may remember from the beloved Blawd Bakehouse, this spot is one of the more unique cafes in the neighbourhood.
Given how many cafes are in this super trendy and ultra hip neighbourhood, that’s saying something. Digressions aside, the first thing to point out about Siop Shop is that everything is homemade, and doughnuts are one of the biggest selling points for many visitors, alongside their equally yummy glazed twists. The flavours are what really sets this operation aside from its competition, including hazelnut and white chocolate, cherry crumble and peanut butter with jelly. Vegans are also catered for, with animal product-free varieties changing weekly.
Every so often, you might also be lucky enough to find the team using leftover dough for baked buns with savoury fillings, too, which again leave a lasting impression. Think caramelised onion and spice, or the incredible Gochujang slow cooked pork breakfast, which comes complete with pickles, fried egg, ginger and sesame. All that aside, the coffee here is excellent, with beans roasted by Siop themselves, and other hot drinks are available, too. Unsurprisingly, given the excellent branding — check their merchandise online if you don’t believe us — 53 Tib Street has now garnered a very loyal customer base thanks to the focus on “coffee and dough from space”, as the tagline reads. Or, to put that another way, stunning cups of Joe and baked treats which taste out of this world good.
