All about sushi, nothing to do with superheroes, this city centre Japanese gem, a stone’s throw from Deansgate, gets just about everything right. Tracing its roots back to a startup operating in a 27 square metre box room circa 2017, thanks to the quality of the food larger premises were soon needed to serve hungry folk in the southern suburb of Chorlton. The move proved to be a success from the off, and a couple of years later things expanded to Ancoats, now a hotbed for drinks and dining. A little while later, the owners found what they describe as ‘the perfect spot’ on Bridge Street in central Manchester.
Due to high demand, this is now the base of all operations and the menu is similarly focused, curated so as not to overwhelm but still provide plenty of enticing options. Despite the name, there’s a lot more happening here than raw fish and rice, although the team are rightly proud of their efforts in that area and this spot has some of the best set nine-piece pescatarian and vegetarian platters in town. Think high quality salmon avocado futomaki, wakame gunkan and yellowtail sashimi, among other delights. A la carte steps things up, with a range of hand rolled temaki, uramaki, gunkan, hosomaki, and deluxe premium uramaki such as the volcano roll and king dragon roll.
The Nigiri selection is particularly incredible, with wagyu A5 and roe, otoro tuna (the finest cut of them all), grilled eel, and tamago (egg) among the choices. Sushi Marvel also offers marvellous rice bowls and noodle dishes, such as teriyaki tofu and sweet soy udon ribeye, vegan tonkotsu ramen and crispy chicken curry. Thirsty? On top of a great range of beers and wines, there’s a very well balanced sake selection available, which runs from traditional to far rarer yuzu fruit wines and mature Black Label styles, best served cold to truly appreciate the caramel and banana aromas.
