Since 2000, Manchester city centre has undergone the most dramatic transformation of any urban area in the United Kingdom. Maybe don’t quote us on it, but we’d even go so far as to say it has changed more than the vast majority of comparable places across continental Europe, too. Growing outwards and upwards at a mind-blowing rate, even locals now find it difficult to keep pace with the rate of development and the number of hidden gems town has to offer.

Kampus, a densely-packed neighbourhood once home to a university business campus, hence the name, is a prime example. A few blocks you could easily miss, but in which you’ll find some amazing spots to eat and drink. Like the Beeswing, a “serene little corner” of Manchester’s “urban garden district”. Focused on two things — great wines and top tapas — the setting is a big selling point. Outdoor tables occupy a long terrace flanked by green leaves and trees, which is a real sun trap during warmer months. The fact this hangs over the Rochdale Canal only boosts the appeal, and the feeling of escaping the chaos and swell of the city proper. In short, it’s an ideal spot to recharge, no matter what’s been happening.

The Beeswing also prides itself on a personal approach. The wine list, which celebrates Europe first and foremost, is packed with amazing bottles but does everything in its power not to take itself too seriously. Or make you do the same. Every piquant is hand-selected by Anna, the proprietor, emphasising the attitude. In terms of food, this is all about sharing style stuff, and the menu moves quickly because seasonality is king. That goes for both tapas options, curated by the team at acclaimed eateries Baratxuri and Levanter, and the separate brunch dishes. Some of which are included in the bottomless experience — 90 minutes of all you can munch and slurp, available from 12.30PM to 4PM Saturdays and Sundays.
