Ask anyone about their favourite South Manchester suburbs, or indeed their favourite Manchester suburbs, and chances are West Didsbury’s in the running. This neighbourhood — which some incorrectly claim is historically Withington (check the name of the old Victorian railway station if you want a debate) — has long been considered the artier and more alternative sibling to upmarket Didsbury Village. Price wise, there’s not much in it these days, and while the original independent spirit has been watered down slightly as the area developed there are still plenty of unique spots where you get a sense of the real identity. Wallop, formerly Wine & Wallop, is a great example.
Situated on picturesque Lapwing Lane, easily one of the most aesthetically pleasing streets in the district, once you’re done marvelling at the tree-lined roads and relaxed ambience you’ll probably be charmed by the exterior. Bright yellow with informal design details, it’s about as inviting as they come. That welcome continues inside this “eatery and drinkery” too, which is known for chilled out staff serving quality produce to good people at the right time.
That could be on a long, slow afternoon unwind, or after dark when the joint takes on a different kind of appeal. Still a world away from the deafening hedonism of our beloved — but chaotic — city centre, nevertheless things definitely step up as evening turns to night. That’s thanks in part to the excellent wine list, and the very well made cocktails poured out by this team of absolute pros. Regular music offerings do nothing to dissuade us, and over the years we’ve been here for intimate DJ parties with expert selectors and daytime jazz concerts alike. All of which only serve to accentuate how the spot represents a different side of the Didsburys — one that’s just as creative, fresh and authentic as ever.
