From Manchester To: Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa, Windermere

A hotel with a “tale of two halves”

The first tale is of a long standing hotel. Low Wood Bay has a reputation going years back as one of the best hotels in the Lake District. Set on the lakeside of Windermere it’s always been an obvious scenic choice.

The second tale is of how this hotel goes from good to great. There’s newly renovated rooms and breakfast lounge, a contemporary entrance with a coffee shop, and a chill area that serves up poke bowls throughout the day – perfect for after that gym sesh.

In addition, there’s the main restaurant – Blue Smoke on The Bay which serves up a grill menu (I recommend the lobster) from its impressive open kitchen. Lastly but certainly not least, it would be criminal not to mention the Low Wood Bay Spa – a particular highlight of our trip.

Those looking to enhance their stay can enjoy The Spa at Low Wood Bay, who offer a thermal journey using a range of ESPA products. When you enter you get an instant whiff of jasmine mixed with coconut – likely emanating from the infused steam room.

You can easily spend 2 hours of relaxation, inside and out in here, with treatments that include a Dry Salt room, Coconut Steam or Herbal Infusions, Refresh with Warm Rain, Cool Mist, or relax yourself in gentle Thermal Currents (posh for Jacuzzi).

Furthermore, we were told that even though it was April, the outside Fellside Infinity Pool, Outside Sauna, Hot Tubs and Fire Pit were open. Result.

I experienced a top class massage treatment from a menu catering for everyone and all set against the amazing Lake District backdrop. After a swim in the infinity pool and a chill on the swinging wooden heated loungers – I was in a relaxing stupor as I drank unlimited cucumber water, swanning around in a luxurious robe, a pair of towel sliders and endless fluffy towels.

A big shout out to the staff who were super professional, attentive and couldn’t do enough for us. The spa lounge area with private bar is a good place to continue your experience, lying on a Chaise longue with a blanket by the open fire – perfect for unwinding after walking laps of the lake all afternoon.

The lakes offer so much. In just under 2 hours from Manchester it’s great to take the lake air in on a boat trip round Windermere (Low Wood Bay will organise tickets) or take a trip down memory lane with The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction.

Be sure to swing by The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop, trust me, you need to taste it to believe it (again, Low Wood Bay can give you a little taste if you ask nicely) or maybe just a long leisurely walk is your thing – the lakes have it all.
