‘CHERYL’s themes have included Pizza, Arctic Fury, Fowl Play and Sasquatch on Broadway. But like glue sticks and frozen burritos CHERYL comes with a warning: this is the ‘dance party that will ruin your life.’

Islington Mill have commissioned Brooklyn based New York artist collective CHERYL to come and stay at the Mill to create an installation and host various events throughout a month long residency. CHERYL is made up of Destiny Pierce, Stina Puotinen, Nick Shiarizzi and Sarah Van Buren. Known for their video art, outrageous costumes, installations, performances, participatory events, dance parties and over-the-top happenings, CHERYL’s work has been featured in various galleries and museums including recently being part of ‘PopRally’ at the Museum of Modern Art, MoMA PS1 as well as ‘THE FUN Fellowship’ at New York’s Museum of Art and Design (MAD), the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Jewish Museum, the Bruce High Quality Foundation and Eyebeam Art and Technology Centre.

Whether it takes the form of unorthodox costumery, compulsive eating, blood spewing or dance floor mass hysteria, RITUAL is an ongoing motif of CHERYL’s work. During CHERYL’s residency they will be using the Royal Family’s age-old traditions as inspiration for exploring new possibilities of ritual and ceremony. CHERYL will be using the ground floor gallery space as their retro chamber to incubate ideas, create costumes, practice immaculately synchronized dance routines and orchestrate their unique ‘homemade videos’ which they use to introduce their party theme. CHERYL will be collaborating with local artists, students of fashion/art/media, musicians and performance collectives. Visitors will be engaged through participatory performances, video shoots and other interactive events. Aside from regular gallery hours, CHERYL will hold special events open to the public on three Wednesday’s: 9 May, 16 May, and 30 May. These events will explore themes of transformation, ritual, and general insanity. CHERYL will hold their culminating event in conjunction with the Royal Highness’ Diamond Jubilee on Sunday 3 June, wherein they will take over the entire Mill and create an explosion of glitter nonsense- the likes of which England has never imagined.
