Following the success of The Great Indoors and MIF’s other work for children, the Manchester International Festival is delighted to announce Music Boxes, a musical adventure for children aged 6 months to 7 years, which will run throughout this year’s festival.
Located at MediaCityUK, the new home of BBC Children‟s, Music Boxes will take place across an enormous playground of shipping containers, especially designed and adapted by BDP.
Alex Poots, Festival Director, said:
“From the start, MIF has been committed to making high quality work for children – an area that can often be undervalued. For MIF 09, The Great Indoors was a hugely popular and oversubscribed single weekend event. This time we’ve created a new commission for under 7’s, to take place over 2 weeks.”
Some containers will become miniature performance spaces, some will be specially customised recording and animation studios, while others will be kitted out as interactive installations allowing the very young to explore a fantastical world of sound and music. From jamming with exciting new musical instruments, to opera for the under-twos; from making your own pop video to learning how to play the ukulele, Music Boxes will be 14 days of musical magic.
Curated by Rachel Clare for Crying Out Loud, and featuring artists and art organisations including BBC Philharmonic, CBeebies, Cornershop and Rude,Inne Goris with Dominique Pauwels and Ruimtevaarders, Oily Cart, Nik Ramage, Jake Rodrigues, Scottish Opera, JoNny* and Stephen Stockbridge, TPO Company and ZingZillas. Music Boxes follows a series of residencies in the build-up to the Festival 2011, all taking place across the ten Greater Manchester boroughs. Each residency introduces the work of the artists into a borough through workshops or performances taking place in schools, nurseries and community venues, enhancing and expanding present arts activities and encouraging children from the community to get involved.
Music Boxes is commissioned by MIF Creative, BBC, Salford City Council and Abu Dhabi Festival, produced by Manchester International Festival and CBeebies, and supported by the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA).
